In 2026, the United States will release new coin designs. These designs will only be used for one year. They honor the country’s people, values, and history.
New versions of the penny, nickel, dime, half dollar, and quarter will be made. Each coin will highlight a different part of America’s story, like the Declaration of Independence and Civil Rights.
This is part of a law passed in 2020 called the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act.
A New Coin Collection: Best of the Mint
Along with the new coins, the U.S. Mint is making a special collection. It’s called Best of the Mint.
This series has five sets. Each set includes a historic coin made from gold and a new silver medal. The coins are made with 24-karat gold. The silver medals show a modern version of the coin’s design.
People in the U.S. voted on their favorite old coin designs. The Mint is now bringing them back in this collection.
Second Set: Standing Liberty Quarter
The second set in the Best of the Mint collection includes two pieces. One is a gold coin. The other is a silver medal.
The gold coin is a copy of the Standing Liberty quarter, first made in 1916. It will be made in 1/4-ounce of pure gold. The design shows Liberty holding a shield and an olive branch. It also has a special mark with the Liberty Bell and the number 250, for America’s 250th birthday.
The Silver Medal: A Fresh Look
The silver medal is based on the same 1916 design but with modern artwork.
On the front, Liberty is shown in the wind, holding olive branches. She faces a flying eagle, which shows peace and strength.
The back of the medal shows the eagle’s claws holding the branches. This continues the message from the front image.
About the Original Design
The Standing Liberty quarter was designed by Hermon A. MacNeil. It first came out in 1916.
This design was part of a time when U.S. coins were becoming more artistic. Collectors loved this coin because it looked bold and powerful.
The front shows Liberty walking through a doorway, ready to defend the nation. The back shows an eagle in flight with 13 stars for the 13 original colonies.

The Standing Liberty set is the second in the Best of the Mint series. The first set featured the Mercury dime, created by Adolph A. Weinman.
